Jack Bauer returns to the Counter Terrorist Unit, to opposition from Driscoll and conflicting orders from the President. When a train bombing results in the death of a man with a metal briefcase cuffed to his wrist, the team realise that the real targets are Secretary of Defense James Heller and his daughter Audrey Raines - Jack's love interest.
As the clock ticks on, the links become too close for comfort: Richard, Heller's son, is hiding information and a CTU mole puts the terrorists one step ahead of them. Cornered, Jack calls up the only person he can trust - an old friend fresh from prison. Forced to operate against authority, Jack follows his instincts and earns Driscoll's trust, even as personal relationships get in the way of the CTU. Seemingly centred around a Turkish family, nobody knows who the real target is as the deadly plan is slowly uncovered, its roots going back much further than expected.
With an imminent nuclear meltdown and a terrorist plan proving more sinister at every turn, every moment counts as the nation is threatened further by a selfish incompetent Vice-President after President Keeler is attacked. It may be all in a day's work, but what a long, gripping day it is.
